American Gothic Revisited

The man slim as a fencepost, and just as still,

Bald spots on his head and jeans.

That pitchfork, carried everywhere.

The frame house behind, where his prideful life unwinds,

And a distant barn are all his ancestors left him.

Beneath a sunless white-blue sky,

Daughter/wife/sister/other to his side,

He stands, unexpectant, in the one exact place he’s known.

His dreamless gaze dismisses you completely.

The woman trying to imagine what she can’t imagine,

A world without the kind of time she lives inside.

Her shoulders slope to the understanding

Each day is the same as every other,

Father/husband/pitchfork/painter

Framing her sideways. No face meets hers.

Standing watch behind,

Church window, shaded pane, obscure screened doorway.

In her narrow eyes the knowledge

They will never open.
